The Heart Behind the Help: Why Giving Back Still Matters By Hilda D. Williams

Spread the love
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here on Notes to Tomorrow, but I promise you — it’s for a good reason. We’ve been full steam ahead preparing for our 7th Annual Back-to-School Giveaway, and as I reflect on all the love, time, and effort poured into this event, I feel led to share the “why” behind it all.

You see, I give back because I truly believe no child should ever have to go to school empty-handed. Every pencil, every backpack, every hug or smile given during this event is a small reminder that they matter — and that someone sees them.A Legacy of Love
I was raised with the value of helping others planted deep in my heart. My father, James Kelley, had a true love for kids and for serving the community. Though he’s no longer with us, we carry on that love through every act of kindness we share during this annual event. His legacy still leads us.

This year, our giveaway is more meaningful than ever. We’re honoring not only my father’s memory, but also the beautiful hearts of two more angels:

Ella Rea, my husband’s grandmother, whose love for children and others never wavered.

Ella Mae Kelley, my mother — who we lost earlier this year in January.

Losing her has left a space in our hearts that words can hardly touch. But we remember her strength, her Christian faith, and her unwavering love. Even after suffering a stroke, she traveled to attend our 5th Annual Giveaway, saying she believed it might be her last chance. She was right — and her presence, her love, and her kindness live on through us.

It’s God’s Plan — I Just Lead
Giving back isn’t about spotlight or status. For me, it’s spiritual. It’s a continuation of what I was taught, a reflection of the people who shaped me, and a way to serve others just as I was once served. I believe this work is part of God’s plan — I’m just here to walk it out in love.
